Free in the Water

If you bring your own snorkel gear, fins, or bodyboard, the Atlantic is yours for free. Hollywood Beach occasionally has shore-breaking waves for bodyboarding, and water clarity during summer can be surprisingly good for snorkeling near jetty structures.

Fishing from the beach is free with a valid Florida fishing license. Florida fishing licenses are affordable for short-term visitors. The surf zone produces pompano, whiting, bluefish, and the occasional snook.

Before choosing where to swim, look at the Florida Healthy Beaches water-quality results. The state posts sampling results and any advisories on individual county pages. Its marine-water categories measure enterococci per 100 milliliters: Good is 0–35, Moderate is 36–70, and Poor is 71 or more. Those labels describe sampled water, so read the result for the sampling site you're considering and note its date.

The program's advisory criterion is a result above 70 colony forming units per 100 milliliters followed by a resample that also exceeds that level. Check both the posted results and advisory information as part of planning your swim; a view of clear water doesn't supply a sampling result. Keep this check alongside the forecast and lifeguard advice.
